We could be thinking of a very narrow set of options, and, in some situations, no options at all.

2 helpful maxims and a philosophy

When confronted with an issue, I have always believed in the following two maxims:

– I am not the only person on Planet Earth to face this particular issue.
– Every issue has a solution.

Armed with these two maxims, and the ‘let a night pass!’ philosophy, I have largely led my life.

A couple of instances

While I can think of many instances when my philosophy of ‘let a night pass’ came in handy, I recall the time when my 86-year old mother had a fall at home a couple of years ago. She was in pain.

My wife and I were not in town. My elder sister and my brother-in-law were at home and they rushed her to a super specialty hospital. The hospital where she was taken, gave her some painkillers that brought her pain under control. Once that was done, they advised surgery of the spine to be done immediately.

‘Let a night pass’ in action

Since the pain has subsided considerably, based on consultation within the family, we decided to ‘let a night pass’. While my wife and I rushed back to Bangalore, my mother was discharged from the hospital and she returned home.

By the time the dawn broke, we had our strategy clear. We had identified another senior doctor through one of our doctor-friends. We took my mother’s X-ray and the reports and met with this doctor the following day.

Considering my mother’s age, the doctor ruled out surgery. In fact, in his view, surgery could lead to complications.

Under his care, my mother entered a long period of bed rest and convalescence. Gradually, her pain subsided and after a few weeks, when she was in a better position to move, we took her in an ambulance to meet the doctor. He was very pleased with the improvement. In fact, he introduced my mother to his junior doctors as an example of a super senior citizen who, in full compliance with the doctor’s instructions, had almost fully recovered.

The philosophy of ‘let a night pass’ had worked. Instead of acting on impulse and wheeling her into the Operation Theater, the ‘let a night pass’ philosophy had played a critical role in arriving at the most optimal solution for my aged mother.

‘Let a night pass’ in action…again!

Recently, a very senior professional connected with me on LinkedIn and engaged me on a coaching assignment.

During the first call itself, he appeared desperate. He had decided to resign from his current job and was just waiting – thankfully – for a round of discussions with me.

I understood the predicament that was leading him to his decision. Since he would have quit without a job in hand, I was able to prevail upon him to delay putting in his papers – another version of my ‘let a night pass’ philosophy in action.

Later, as we began our in-depth discussions, several options other than the option of resignation emerged. Even after months after having had our first coaching conversation, he is still in the same organization, albeit in a different role. This option of a change to a different role was the result of our coaching conversation. The philosophy had worked.

‘Let a night pass’ and my career

I worked in the corporate world for over 30 years. Those were different times.

During those 30 years, I would have felt like resigning from the job at least fifty times. I would have felt like resigning on the same day at least thirty times and about a dozen times at that particular moment. Yet, I resigned from my job only 4 times in my life. The fifth occasion was when I quit corporate life for good.

The intention of sharing this particular example is not to glorify any kind of persistence or suffering. Far from it.

Things that seemed very dire acquire a different hue the next morning because we are calmer and more collected.

When we see the issue in a new light, it helps us take a more rational and well-considered decision. We begin to appear bigger in stature than the issue that confronts us – more in control.

Now, just in case this post is spurring you to take any urgent action at all, just hold on.

Let a night pass!

What are you thinking? In such cases, it is the HR team that normally scouts for external coaches based on the coaching needs already identified in a person. In most cases, the coachee’s manager has identified the coaching need, working with the coachee. The HR team and the coachee’s manager have decided the way forward.

Coachees who seek coaching in their individual capacity – not sponsored by any organization. In my world, such coachees regularly reach out to me via LinkedIn, my website, or through references.

Where the coachee is sponsored by an organization, in most cases, the coaching need – or the need for Change – has been identified in more or less a timely manner. This is because there is a structured Performance Appraisal process in such organizations. However, when it comes to the coachees reaching out to me in their individual capacity, in most cases, the need for Change is already urgent. The desired Change is expected quickly. This is because the need has simmered within them for quite some time.

Why is it that individuals do not attend to the need for Change or delay attending to it? For this, it is important to understand how we manage Change.

How do we manage Change?

When it comes to Change, many years ago, I read about the Interchange Cycle in a book by Lillie R. Brock & Mary Ann Salerno – highly recommended!

The book speaks about the 6 stages of Change that an individual passes through. See the table below:

<img data-attachment-id="3821" data-permalink="http://ksramanan.com/dont-wait-initiate-that-change-now/screen-shot-2021-06-18-at-11-38-31-am/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?fit=346%2C119" data-orig-size="346,119" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Screen Shot 2021-06-18 at 11.38.31 AM" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?fit=300%2C103" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?fit=346%2C119" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3821" src="https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?resize=346%2C119" alt="" width="346" height="119" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?w=346 346w, https://i0.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Screen-Shot-2021-06-18-at-11.38.31-AM.png?resize=300%2C103 300w" sizes="(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Typically, when it comes to any Change, the Interchange model suggests that we normally pass through Stage 1 to Stage 6. Each stage is characterized by specific ‘feelings of’, ‘thoughts are’ and ‘behavior is’ elements. Stage 6 is when the Change is so fully integrated that it is now a part of us.

The red band shown in the table between Stage 3 and 4 is called the Danger Zone. It is thus termed because, at this stage, there is a real risk of going back to the initial stages of #3, 2, & 1 rather than moving forward to Stage #4, 5, & 6.

What I like about the Interchange model is that it helps us understand the natural process of – and resistance to – Change. It has resonated very well with me as I went through the many situations of Personal Change. To me, the model also informs us that we need not feel guilty or shameful when we feel resistant to Change. It is only natural to resist. Also, what the model does is that it shows that there is a pathway beyond.

The role of a coach

When it comes to the role of the coach, to borrow Socrates’ words, ‘I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.’

The coach’s role is to empower the coachee to move forward and show the coachee how they can move forward. To relate to the table, many a time, the coach is actually gently nudging the coachee to move forward across the Stages. It is while the coach and the coachee are having the conversations that the ‘feelings’, ‘thoughts’, and ‘behaviors’ can be observed/felt by the coach. While it is the coachee’s role to initiate that Change, the coach needs to create the right conditions for the coachee to feel empowered.

Many a time, I can see the struggle of my coachees through the prism of the Interchange Cycle model. The model clearly illustrates why people delay dealing with the Change.

Feeling stuck? Initiate that Change NOW!

I was recently coaching a senior professional who appeared stuck in his career. While he has been contributing very well to his organization, there was a feeling that he is ‘being taken for granted’ by the organization. He felt that one of the reasons is that he has been in the same organization for too long a time – for over 12 years. When I began working with him, I sensed that he was in Stage #3 – feeling anxious and his thoughts were confused.

I decided to open up a new highway for him – could he begin imagining himself 2 years from now? To make it really specific, I asked him to imagine what would happen 2 years from now – his work title, his Job Description, his preferred organization, and also his CTC. Also, given a choice, what would his contribution within his organization and the industry look like.

As I began receiving his well-researched responses, I realized that I had successfully nudged him past the Danger Zone. He had moved quickly to Stage #4. Apart from responding to my questions, he had created his resume – for the first time in over a decade. He was heavily invested in the coaching process and was excitedly looking forward to our conversations.

Move!

My Quote #345 says:<img data-attachment-id="3829" data-permalink="http://ksramanan.com/dont-wait-initiate-that-change-now/whatsapp-image-2021-06-18-at-1-28-55-pm/" data-orig-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?fit=1080%2C1080" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="WhatsApp Image 2021-06-18 at 1.28.55 PM" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?fit=300%2C300" data-large-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?fit=940%2C940" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-3829 aligncenter" src="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=291%2C291" alt="" width="291" height="291" srcset="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?w=1080 1080w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=300%2C300 300w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=1024%2C1024 1024w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=768%2C768 768w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/WhatsApp-Image-2021-06-18-at-1.28.55-PM.jpeg?resize=940%2C940 940w" sizes="(max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

In the context of the Interchange Cycle, to ‘move’ would mean moving to the next stage of the Interchange Cycle.

And, as indicated in the above example, a coach could play a major role to help you move through the stages.

Now that you know how the Change process works, don’t wait! It was on Jan 14th, to be precise. Since then I have been an independent Learning & Development Consultant and Coach.

Read here what I wrote on this subject 2 years ago.

Over the last 7 wonderful years of independent work, I have been engaged in a variety of pursuits. As an anniversary approaches, it is only natural to go into a bit of flashback. I wanted to share my journey of 7 years with you using my own original Quotes as anchors.

Before taking the plunge

1. I have always believed in following my heart. This belief has made me take unconventional turns in my career and life because you ‘Do what you love and you will breeze through Life.’ (Quote #173).

2. I have always believed that life offers us alternate paths. ‘Our future need not be an extrapolation of our past. A new turn can lead us to a new future.’ (Quote #113).

3. Risks are an integral part of our career and life. As a rather simplistic definition, ‘Risk is just an intimidating term for a likely undesirable outcome.’ (Quote #108). However, in a VUCA world, where the sands are constantly shifting, it is important to unlearn, learn, and relearn stuffβ-βthese are again risks. By the way, in today’s times, ‘Not willing to take risks’ is the new risk.’ (Quote #262).

If you think you are not a risk-taker, read this post of mine here and think again.

4. People who are overcautious are forever waiting for that perfect moment to make their move. My advice would be, ‘Don’t wait. You will never be 100% ready.’ (Quote #344).

5. It is important to step out. The first step matters. ‘Take that first step with courage. The rest will follow.’ (Quote #95). Of course, you should have done a solid reality check of your prospects before taking the plunge.

6. The comfort zone is a trap. It prevents us from discovering who we could truly become. After all, ‘Life’s exciting discoveries are located just outside our comfort zone.’ (Quote #207).

Taking the plunge

7. Once we have finally decided to step out on our own, it is important to not worry about what others think of us. ‘It is astonishing how liberated you can feel if you are not bothered about what others think of you.’ (Quote #81). While we will have well-wishers, there will always be some people in our life who are waiting for us to fail.

8. Once we have taken a decision, we need to own it completely. Because ‘If you take complete responsibility for the consequences of your actions, you will enjoy this sport called life.’ (Quote #242). No blaming anyone, please!

While at it

9. As you challenge your own boundaries and shatter your glass ceiling, only you will know what kind of growth has happened to you as a consequence because ‘No one can really understand the value of your personal triumphs.’ (Quote #200).

10. Many a time, we are surprised by our own capabilities. Serendipity! Because ‘You will have no idea what you are capable of until you try.’ (Quote #183).

11. As you go about your life and work, it is important to know how you will evaluate your success. However, you have to be clear that ‘Success is not what others define for you. It is what you define for yourself.’ (Quote #191).

12. In the Covid-19 scenario, much of my work is coachingβ-βquite understandable given the tumultuous changes the pandemic has caused to organizations, individual careers, and life in general. By the way, I happen to enjoy coaching immensely because of the breakthroughs that a coachee experiences. My role in coaching: ‘Help others see a grander version of themselves and they will be inspired to fill the empty spaces.’ (Quote #17). Also, a coach is an incorrigible optimist because ‘A coach believes in you more than you believe in yourself.’ (Quote #304).

13. I constantly create new goals that challenge me. ‘Chase big goals in life to know what you are capable of.’ (Quote #366).

14. In these 7 years, I have experienced bliss innumerable times – almost on a daily basis. In my language, ‘Bliss is that stage in life when there is absolutely no need to prove anything to anybody.’ (Quote #36).

What you sow so shall you reap

Jan 14th is normally celebrated as a harvest festival in different parts of our country. As I approach another harvest festival at the end of 7 years, I am reminded of what an author once said,

‘Cultivate your craft. Water it daily, pour some tender loving care into it, and watch it grow. Remember that a plant doesn’t sprout immediately. Be patient, and know that in life you will reap what you sow.’

I can see that this passage applies not just to writing but to anything worthwhile that we wish to achieve in a career or life.

Not the seven-year itch!

While I reap the harvest today of what I had been sowing through the last 7 years, I continue to sow today what I could reap another day.

Because what I am engaged in could go on forever.

You see, it is not a seven-year itch!

Are you going through the proverbial ‘seven-year itch’ in your current role? Though the breeze is still strong, it is not as cold as yesterday.

There is a certain pleasure in enjoying the sunshine after experiencing cold weather for days on end. Though in Bangalore, both the cold and the sunshine are mild, I have had the pleasure of enjoying warm sunshine after days of extremely cold weather.

At Jungfraujoch in Switzerland, as a family, we huddled together in the snow at 11,700 ft. for a picture. Though it was sunny, it was biting cold, and being quite a windy day, we were freezing. After the picture, we headed to Indian Restaurant Bollywood at the site. The restaurant had massive glass windows and we got a table by the window. The sunshine fell on me through the closed glass window and I began removing layers of my clothing. As I sat there soaking in the sun, nothing in the Universe seemed to matter. We ended up ordering the Mumbaiyya pav-bhaji. As the plate was placed in front of me, I smelled fresh buttered pav and spotted steam rising from the bhaji with an aroma that reminded me of faraway home. With the warm glowing sunshine falling on us while people outside the window were freezing, I didn’t want the experience to end.

At Edinburgh, when my wife and I were attending our son’s Masters Graduation ceremony, it was 4 degrees and a ‘feels-like’ sub-zero around that time. On a day, when the sun was out, it was a celebration. We walked to the Christmas Fair. As we were going around, I spotted a wooden bench flooded in the warm sunshine. I must have stood at a distance, facing the bench while looking at my wife and son intermittently. They got the message. I was allowed the luxury of sitting in the sun while they went around. The bench provided a ringside view of the Fair proceedings including watching families celebrating the sun’s appearance. Many had brought their tiny dogs and cats in bags with the pets occasionally peeping out. I was surrounded by many happy family reunions. These families seemed to have gone to great lengths to celebrate the sun. In a way, both my wife and I had traveled miles to celebrate our son.

At Hemkunt Sahib Gurudwara (Sikh place of worship) in the Himalayas, before entering the gurudwara, I went for a dip in the sarovar (holy pond). The sarovar was covered with a thin film of ice. I was unprepared for the dip but was warmly encouraged by fellow-pilgrims, making it easier to handle the difference in temperature. I gently cracked the ice with my open palm and entered the sarovar. Following the refreshing bath, I stood in the warm sun for some time. It was bliss followed by another blissful experience in the form of savoring hot suji-ka-halwa (Indian dessert) at the langar (community kitchen).

After a spell of cold weather, we have enjoyed the sun during long walks in different parts of the world. Whether it was sauntering around Queenstown in New Zealand as a family or walking at the Blackwattle Bay in Sydney catching up with our son or while picking strawberries at Kumeu in New Zealand or during the long sight-seeing walks with our son in Edinburgh or window shopping (the only variety of shopping that we could afford) along the Champs-ΓlysΓ©es in Paris.

Back home, the New Delhi winters used to be cold enough to enjoy the sun that made an appearance after several days. While in college, I used to sit at a desk placed in the sun outside of my home studying. As the sun shone brighter, I would reposition my chair or suspend a bedsheet from the clothesline to insulate myself from the bright sun.

In New Delhi, we used to walk around Connaught Place, laze around at the India Gate lawns picnicking as a family, and head to Pragati Maidan for the India International Trade Fair during November. We have enjoyed the sun during our various visits to hill stations in India.

As winter approaches India, early morning fog and mist with poor visibility will be the norm, especially in the north of India. The sun will not be visible for days on end.

However, one just has to be patient for the sun to show up.

In a form, the sun is a permanent source of hope, optimism, and renewal.

Thank God for that!

The post Thank God for the sun! appeared first on K S Ramanan.
";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:36:"http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/";a:1:{s:10:"commentRss";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:48:"http://ksramanan.com/thank-god-for-the-sun/feed/";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:38:"http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/";a:1:{s:8:"comments";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:1:"0";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:30:"com-wordpress:feed-additions:1";a:1:{s:7:"post-id";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"3766";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}}}i:4;a:6:{s:4:"data";s:82:" ";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";s:5:"child";a:6:{s:0:"";a:7:{s:5:"title";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:23:"My bus travels in India";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:4:"link";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:45:"http://ksramanan.com/my-bus-travels-in-india/";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:8:"comments";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:53:"http://ksramanan.com/my-bus-travels-in-india/#respond";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:7:"pubDate";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:31:"Fri, 15 May 2020 05:39:30 +0000";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:8:"category";a:4:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:6:"Sights";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:1;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:6:"Travel";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:2;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:8:"traveler";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:3;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:10:"travelling";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:4:"guid";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:28:"http://ksramanan.com/?p=3739";s:7:"attribs";a:1:{s:0:"";a:1:{s:11:"isPermaLink";s:5:"false";}}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:11:"description";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:788:"
I love traveling within India by bus. Its innocuous name β in many cases, the name of the youngest member in the ownerβs family – is a cunning deception.

The very choice of the lettering size that takes up half of the windshield space is designed to intimidate. While weaving in and out of traffic and intermittently emitting high decibel screams, it resembles a sperm whale escaping a larger predator.

It is specifically on such occasions that I take the safety warning printed on my rear-view mirror very seriously β βobjects in mirror are closer than they appearβ. I allow the beast to pass.

Quite suddenly, the bus cuts to the left and grinds to a halt while breathing heavily to disgorge the still-shaking passengers. The driver leaps off the bus. He is middle-aged and wiry, in his lungi (a garment wrapped around the waist) with no footwear. He crosses the road to buy cigarettes and runs back into the bus.

The bus jumps up, screams again, and races ahead leaving a cloud of dust behind. With the speeding bus ahead of us, we heave a sigh of relief.

A life-saving lesson: never overtake this beast. Like bad karma, it is sure to catch up with you.

Inside a Kerala bus

Private buses in Kerala are like elephants on an overdose of steroids. They are driven madly by unassuming drivers – in this case, the driver was a middle-aged man with a liberal application of sandalwood paste on his forehead indicating his inclination to things metaphysical.

Wearing a fading white dhoti (a garment wrapped around the waist) folded half-way up for quick movement of the limbs to save lives – both inside and outside the bus and rubber slippers on his feet, he was driving like a devil-possessed but with the cold demeanor of an Arctic iceberg.

The beastly vehicle was hurtling down hairpin bends at breakneck speed, avoiding contact with pedestrians, cyclists and vehiclesβ¦just about.

No one, including the driver, could claim to be firmly seated at any given point of time. People around me were clutching onto anything handy even if it were a benevolent neighborβs oil-smeared hair plait.

A bus trip in Karnataka – Mangalore to Thirthahalli

The bus driver is a young man with a stylish beard. He is wearing a khaki shirt over black trousers. He appears to be a man of few words. Except for a couple of times when he indulged in some pan masala, he is fully focused on the job.

The bus is a smaller version to enable easy negotiation of the Ghat section (the winding hilly roads) and given the same engine as the larger bus makes this bus very powerful. A framed picture of the Gods adorned with a marigold garland makes this bus invincible. I am on the right bus, I think!

I am seated on the first seat next to the windshield facing the driver. Rotating slightly on my seat to awkwardly face the windshield, I am almost in a similar position as the driver.

The road is in great condition. Occasionally, the driver presses a small lever and the bus emits a loud shrieking sound. This horn is not for the faint-hearted.

The bus is full. Although the bench facing the driver can at best accommodate only 5 people, and all the 5 seats are currently occupied, the conductor keeps coming to us and asks us to squeeze ourselves closer. He returns disappointed when he realizes the futility of his instructions only to return a few kilometers down the road to repeat the instructions. I always knew travel brings us closer but my wife and I are not just close, we are now almost fused. For the same reason, I am relieved that my wife’s adjoining passenger is a middle-aged woman.

It is a bright day and the bus, although noisy, appears to be in top condition. We drive over several water bodies, all of which are full as a result of generous rainfall in these parts – such a beautiful sight to behold. Occasionally, we pass yellow-colored metal barricades and the bus swerves left and right to avoid hitting them before it stabilizes.

We briefly enter Udupi, the temple town. I spot a shop, ‘Sri Krishna Emission Test’. Very appropriate! Given the way the country’s air quality is headed, divine intervention is certainly needed.

As the driver enters the Udupi Bus Stand, a group of young burqa-clad women who appear in the way is quickly scattered by the shrieking horn. The driver smiles and I thought I spot a similar spirit in them. This is regular Indian life – no time for an emotional overdrive. No offense meant.

We pass a narrow winding road and slow down. Two buses coming from opposite directions have stopped in the middle of the road and the drivers are exchanging some notes. Our driver blows the horn just as a matter of polite courtesy – no hard feelings! In fact, when the jam clears, our driver waves at the ‘culprit’ driver and they exchange smiles.

We have entered the Ghat section. The road is winding and climbing at the same time. Driving on the Ghat section demands special driving skills – our driver seems perfectly poised to take us across the Ghat section. I spot the new phenomenon around these parts – a column of Harley Davidson riders.

With every curve, we ascend higher. Now we can spot the deep valley enveloped in mist. At every blind turn, our driver blows the horn for almost 20 seconds each. He is a generous man. I spot monkeys scurrying for cover as our driver inflicts the horn on them.

We have reached Agumbe. The conductor announces a longer break for snacks and tea. Many of the passengers have alighted.

We have now resumed the last leg of the drive to Thirthahalli.

Traveling on a regular non-airconditioned bus takes us through the real India. Air-conditioned travel insulates us not only from the heat, dust, and noise, it also insulates us from the buzzing Indian way of life.

Life in the real India is based on a sense of fluidity and approximation. When we introduce the Western template of high accuracy, cutting-edge quality, knock-your-socks-off service delivery, and insane customer expectations, we end up complaining all the time causing misery to ourselves and to those around us.

I love bus travel within India.

One thing is guaranteed. When it comes to bus travel, I am never ever likely to say, ‘Bus, bahuth ho gayaa!’ (Hindi, to mean enough is enough).

The post My bus travels in India appeared first on K S Ramanan.
";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:36:"http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/";a:1:{s:10:"commentRss";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:50:"http://ksramanan.com/my-bus-travels-in-india/feed/";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:38:"http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/";a:1:{s:8:"comments";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:1:"0";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:30:"com-wordpress:feed-additions:1";a:1:{s:7:"post-id";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"3739";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}}}i:5;a:6:{s:4:"data";s:142:" ";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";s:5:"child";a:6:{s:0:"";a:7:{s:5:"title";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:48:"Stepping out of the comfort zone? However, now that she was in a leadership position, she was expected to mingle with people, meet with new clients, strike a conversation, and take a lead in client relationships. This was getting very hard for her.

I was listening to her intently, especially to the language that she was using. For instance, I heard her saying:

– I can never speak to strangers
– I can never imagine going out for coffee with someone I haven’t known
– I always wait for someone else to introduce me
– I can never speak about anything outside of my domain

She was repeatedly using ‘never’, and ‘always’.

Words such as ‘never’ and ‘always’ are future-limiting.

For instance, when I say, ‘I can never speak to strangers’, in one sentence, I have covered the past, present, and future.

It means that not only have I not spoken to strangers, but I will also never be able to speak to strangers throughout my life. You can see how future-limiting this sentence is!

Watch what our internal languaging does to us. Read my post, ‘Silence Your Internal Chatter’ here.

Stepping out of the comfort zone

Instead, if I were to say, ‘I have not spoken to strangers till now’, just by altering the sentence a bit and adding ’till now’, I have kept my future open. While my past indicates something to me, I could still bring about a change in my future by stepping out of my comfort zone and discovering something new.

When we keep our future open, it opens up possibilities.

My Quote #207 says:

<img data-attachment-id="3728" data-permalink="http://ksramanan.com/stepping-out-of-the-comfort-zone-use-mindsport/discoveries/" data-orig-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?fit=1080%2C1080" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="discoveries" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?fit=300%2C300" data-large-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?fit=940%2C940" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-3728 size-medium aligncenter" src="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=300%2C300" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=300%2C300 300w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024 1024w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=768%2C768 768w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?resize=940%2C940 940w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/discoveries.jpg?w=1080 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

I introduced Mindsport to my client.

What is Mindsport?

I conceptualized Mindsport as a sport that we play with our minds. It is a sport in which we nudge our minds to experiment with something new. It could be something that our mind has resisted until now. Since it is a sport, we can be playful. We could win or lose the game and we could still be playful anticipating the next round. Mindsport can be both learning and fun.

Why Mindsport?

I have realized that as we progress in life, we need to keep adapting to new changes. Read my post, ‘Life as a Video Game’ here. As we clear one level of the video game, we are introduced to a new level that demands more and more from us.

As we progress through our life or career, we realize that our old views, habits, and competencies are getting questioned. Some of them may have now become redundant, irrelevant, obsolete, or blunt. We may need to acquire, adopt, and adapt. In essence, stepping out of the comfort zone.

How does Mindsport work?

In the case of this client, I wanted her to nudge her mind to try something new in a playful way.

The idea was not for her to become someone else. She needed to be proud of what she had accomplished in her career thus far.

It was just that the new role expected her to add some more skills to her portfolio. I was using Mindsport to this effect. Till now, she may have experienced internal resistance. But with Mindsport, it is just a game. Why not try it?

Mindsport – my experience

I have greatly benefitted from Mindsport.

For instance, when I quit corporate life to become an entrepreneur, I had never focused on Brand Building and Marketing in a way an entrepreneur would. However, the new turn in my career demanded it.

I needed to step out of my comfort zone.

Mindsport helped me nudge myself into a new zone of learning. I learned all about Brand, setting up a website, and becoming active in social media using all available platforms.

I have stumbled and fallen. I have made mistakes. Since it was Mindsport, a playful journey, I set myself up regularly.

Today I have a very active website with hundreds of subscribers. I have published over 140 articles on my website and over 30 editions of my newsletter. With over 64000 Page Views on my website, I have published 366 original Quotes and compiled them into a book titled, ‘366 Insights for Life‘. I have published an ebook, ‘31 Ways to Reclaim Your Happiness‘, that is offered free to my subscribers.

Many of my website visitors are my clients today.

While the Brand Building & Marketing journey continues, my point is that Mindsport helps us step out of our comfort zone in a playful way.

Start small

Mindsport assumes that there is nothing wrong with you. The context has changed and therefore, the need for some new changes.

I have learned in my life that if we want our minds to offer the least resistance to our new ideas, start small.

My Quote #243 says:

<img data-attachment-id="3713" data-permalink="http://ksramanan.com/stepping-out-of-the-comfort-zone-use-mindsport/small/" data-orig-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?fit=1080%2C1080" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Small" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?fit=300%2C300" data-large-file="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?fit=940%2C940" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-3713 size-medium aligncenter" src="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=300%2C300" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=300%2C300 300w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024 1024w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=768%2C768 768w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?resize=940%2C940 940w, https://i2.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Small.jpg?w=1080 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Since my client’s new role demanded her to mingle with people, meet with new clients, strike a conversation, and take a lead in client relationships, using Mindsport, would she be willing to nudge her mind playfully to do just 3 things to begin with?

Say Hello first

Introduce everyone in the meeting or call

Get to know more details about the people in the meeting or call

The role of a coach is to ‘stay with the client’. I have pledged my support to her. Once she has gained confidence and adjusted to this new normal, I could throw in more challenging assignments. If she has found it difficult to accomplish even these 3 things, we could look at alternate ideas. After all, Mindsport can be a continuing process.

Acquire, Adapt, Adopt

Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, things are changing. We do not yet know the type and extent of these changes. However, one thing is certain.

All of us will be expected to step out of our comfort zone – to learn new skills, and new ways of doing things. In short, to acquire, adopt, and adapt.

And just in case your mind resists any such changes, just remember that it is quite normal. But what you have now is a friend by your side – a friend named Mindsport.

Are you being expected to step out of your comfort zone? A coach can help. It was a 9-hour drive by Innova. The driver, Sandeep Singh, was a youngΒ Punjabi.

We had been told that the whole stretch was a gourmet’s paradise. To top it all, we were in safe and caring hands – aΒ PunjabiΒ friend, aΒ Punjabi driver, and in the PunjabiΒ country.

Wah! Ga!

We visited the Wagah Border before reaching Amritsar. We went through Security and as we reached the stands, we realized we were just in time. The crowd had swelled – people of all ages, shapes, and sizes had occupied every inch of available space. I had hoped to perch myself comfortably at a vantage point to click pictures but alas, that was not to be. My wife and I had separated…I mean only at the Viewing Gallery. I found myself balancing on one foot. It seemed quite apt – this Border did represent a delicate balance of power.

Patriotism on display

Patriotic film songs were playing loudly and as it happens in such situations, people were strutting their patriotic stuff. Some were shouting slogans while several old people were talking about Partition and what it had done to the two countries. Although we were quite a distance away, we saw a crowd on the other side of the gate, and songs were playing there as well. One startling difference was the size of the crowd – we had outnumbered them several times over.

The warm-up exercise began with an athletic BSF jawan rushing towards the crowds and inspiring us to cheer. He held a microphone and as he shouted slogans, the crowds would follow faithfully. To generate higher decibels, he would systematically, but suddenly, raise both his hands in the air, and immediately the cheering would reach a crescendo. He faced each of the Viewing Stands in quick succession providing equal opportunity to all. The noise was pleasantly deafening.

Inspiring march

The ceremony began with the sound of bugles, as two women in uniform marched in long strides with a great deal of determination and purpose towards the gate. I had never seen women march in this style. As they marched forward, the crowd began shouting slogans, regularly inspired by the jawan. This was repeated several times and we could feel the charge of high voltage electricity in the air. My hairs stood on end.

The next part of the routine was the intense marching exercise by the jawans – as they marched, they raised their knees to chest-level and brought their feet down with a loud thud as if in a fit of rage. This was repeated several times and with variations. The crowd was now belligerent with several volunteers from the crowds creating their own islands of the faithful.

In the final part, gates on either side were swung open. The crowd realized that this was probably the final part and they went out of control, vocally. The electric charge being generated there at that time could feed a billion homes. Finally, in a solemn ritual, flags from both sides were lowered, gates were slammed shut, the Indian tricolor folded and brought back by a battery of jawans.

The crowds began dispersing leisurely but the mood had certainly changed. Something inside each one of us had moved…forever.

I couldn’t resist exclaiming, ‘Wah! Ga!’

Food pilgrimage

We quickly realized that food was the main religion in these parts. People loved, rather lived to eat, there was no doubt about that. Although we were vegetarians – a disqualification in these parts – the dhabas offered incredible variety for vegetarians as well. Even as vegetarians, we were spoilt for choice.

The names of some of these dhabas did not leave much to the imagination, in terms of richness of the food served. For instance, try ordering zero-calorie food at Pahalwan Dhaba. Counting calories in these parts is a strict no-no. Every item was soaked inΒ desi gheeΒ so much so that we were finding it difficult to hold these hot and slipperyΒ tandoori rotis. As a standard protocol, even before we began the process of ordering food, tumblers of cold water, and a bowl of king-size butter cubes were placed on the table.

As we were checking into our Amritsar hotel, the hotel manager began listing joints in the city that were to be visited for a different kind of pilgrimage – for followers of food.

In the process, we went to Kulwant Dhaba, presided over by a hefty and fiercely proudΒ SikhΒ who barked orders at his employees and guests alike. We savored the stuffed kulchas like obedient schoolchildren, afraid of incurring the owner’s wrath. He ensured that everybody – his employees, and the guests – behaved themselves.

The Golden Temple

We experienced the serenity of the Golden Temple at night. The golden structure’s reflection on theΒ sarovar, the soft rendition of the hymns, the disciplined congregation of the faithful who waited patiently as rain fell steadily, the happy volunteers serving at the temple made it a heavenly experience.

The final part was theΒ langar – the community kitchen. Amidst the deafening sound of steel plates eagerly meeting each other, we sat on the floor experiencing the generous hospitality, yet again. Here again, we were like school children but awestruck with what the convergence of religion, generosity, and community service could accomplish.

We had to visit more eateries in the night, primarily to satisfy the hotel manager who lay in wait for us at the entrance. A chosen few celebrate it and the rest work hard all their life to deny it.’

A few months ago, one of our friends came home with their talented 7-year old daughter. The daughter sings brilliantly. When I listened to her first about a couple of years ago, I thought she was a prodigy. Her melodious voice and perfect rendition could mesmerize the audience.

On that day, her mother wanted her to sing for us. The girl was not interested. Her mother was coaxing, cajoling, and trying all her tricks to get the girl to sing. She encouraged her, teased her, became angry but the girl would not budge.

The father got into the act using his tricks, as well. It did not work. We were watching all this and it was turning out to be embarrassing and awkward for all of us.

Finally, my 85-year old mother who was patiently watching all this stood up, held the 7-year oldβs hand, and took her to the other room. Within a couple of minutes, we heard a brilliant rendition in a melodious voice from the room. I could see a huge sigh of relief on the parentsβ faces.

One could debate if it were a good idea on the part of the parents to put their daughter in a spot. I raise a different point today.

I have seen many cases where talented individuals are too shy to demonstrate their talent. Call it shyness or hesitation but their talent is never available to the world.

I have a view that when you possess a talent, it is the Universeβs way of telling you that you are extra special. It is called talent because it is available in a much larger measure in you as compared to what others possess.

I believe that every individual is talented. We need to consider this as a fact of life and then look inward and spot our own talent. If you realize that in an area of life, you are different from others, chances are that you have a talent in that area. Just go deeper and identify it.

Talent is not always about the fine arts. It could be that you listen well or that you hold people’s secrets well. It could be that you cook very well or show kindness and compassion for others. It could be that you are a great connector of people, you coordinate well to make things happen or that you enjoy solving people’s problems. You could be a great coach or advisor. You could be talented in representing the interests of the underserved. You could be working patiently with senior citizens.

My view is that since you have been handpicked by the Universe for this talent, the only way to repay this βdebtβ is to put this back into the Universe. This means that if your talent lies in teaching, find more opportunities to teach. If you are a great cook, cook more varieties for more people, if you write well, write more and so on. Conversely, if you do not express your talent, my belief is that it will be taken away from you – have you heard of the rusted engine?

Now, get that guitar out of the attic, that easel out of the storehouse and reconnect your wires of talent. For those who are not sure if they are talented, ask your best friend, βwhat do you think I am really good at ?β Be ready to list down your talents.

Did you know that when you transpose the letters T and L of Talent, it spells Latent, meaning, hidden?

Let your talent no longer be hidden. Let the Universe know how talented you are.

May I help you locate your talent? I have a proven technique that can help. Reach out to me at mailme@ksramanan.com. Let the world discover you in a new light.

The post All of us are talented appeared first on K S Ramanan.
";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:36:"http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/";a:1:{s:10:"commentRss";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:49:"http://ksramanan.com/all-of-us-are-talented/feed/";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:38:"http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/";a:1:{s:8:"comments";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:1:"0";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}s:30:"com-wordpress:feed-additions:1";a:1:{s:7:"post-id";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"3697";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}}}}i:8;a:6:{s:4:"data";s:121:" ";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";s:5:"child";a:6:{s:0:"";a:7:{s:5:"title";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:46:"10 things to do if you are searching for a job";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:4:"link";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:68:"http://ksramanan.com/10-things-to-do-if-you-are-searching-for-a-job/";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:8:"comments";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:76:"http://ksramanan.com/10-things-to-do-if-you-are-searching-for-a-job/#respond";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:7:"pubDate";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:31:"Fri, 10 Apr 2020 02:39:21 +0000";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:8:"category";a:17:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:8:"Insights";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:1;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:6:"career";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:2;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:15:"career coaching";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:3;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:15:"career planning";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:4;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:7:"careers";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:5;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:8:"coaching";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:6;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:7:"Courage";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:7;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:6:"future";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:8;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"goal";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:9;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:5:"goals";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:10;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:10:"leadership";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:11;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:8:"learning";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:12;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"life";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:13;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:10:"life coach";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:14;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:9:"mentoring";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:15;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:4:"work";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}i:16;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:9:"workspace";s:7:"attribs";a:0:{}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:4:"guid";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:28:"http://ksramanan.com/?p=3650";s:7:"attribs";a:1:{s:0:"";a:1:{s:11:"isPermaLink";s:5:"false";}}s:8:"xml_base";s:0:"";s:17:"xml_base_explicit";b:0;s:8:"xml_lang";s:0:"";}}s:11:"description";a:1:{i:0;a:5:{s:4:"data";s:783:"
Here are 10 things to do if you are searching for a job! Although highly qualified, in the last few roles, he has had several very short stints.

HOHO Effect

I have a term for such short stints in a resume: HOHO (Hop On Hop Off) Effect. The term, ‘HOHO’ is borrowed from the world of tourist bus services where you board a HOHO bus and get down at any of the stops. After touring that area, you can continue the journey by taking another HOHO bus and get down again at any of the stops. This way you follow the pace of your choice.

When a resume shows several short stints, it appears that you have been taking a HOHO bus in your career. A recruiter sees it as a red flag.

In the case of this senior professional, the HOHO Effect was coming up during his interviews and the process was stalling.

Not the best time to go searching for a job

Anyway, these are not the best of times to search for a job. The lockdown is on. Organizations are cautious. Existing hiring requests have been put on hold. New requests are not being processed. Nobody knows when things will return to normal.

So what does one do? Nothing is going to change on its own. One has to act.

What if you are this person?

You need leverage.

Especially in a case where a prospective employer could use the HOHO Effect as a justification to deny you an opportunity, you cannot leave it to the natural course of events. Even if it is not a case of HOHO, given the conditions of job search today, you need leverage.

So, what is the leverage?

The leverage while searching for a job is to connect with senior people in the industry who know you personally, who can vouch for you, and who would leverage their influence to not only nudge a door open but also hold the door wide open for you.

You need to have a professional-looking resume. Ensure that you have fully leveraged the LinkedIn features including Recommendations. Have you been active on LinkedIn? In the resume, have you provided a link to your LinkedIn profile?

Now, where do you begin? Here are 10 things you need to do:

1. Make a list of all the senior people in the industry that you know. While making the list, be liberal. Make sure you go back in time and include the names of your colleagues (managers, peers, and subordinates) from your earlier roles. Even customers. And acquaintances. When in doubt, add the name.

Please remember that Employee Referral schemes are quite popular in the industry. People who could be much junior to you in the industry could also refer your case within their organization.

Prioritize

2. Prioritize. Below is a helpful grid:

<img data-attachment-id="3655" data-permalink="http://ksramanan.com/10-things-to-do-if-you-are-searching-for-a-job/screen-shot-2020-04-09-at-12-32-17-pm/" data-orig-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?fit=381%2C246" data-orig-size="381,246" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Screen Shot 2020-04-09 at 12.32.17 PM" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?fit=300%2C194" data-large-file="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?fit=381%2C246" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3655" src="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?resize=381%2C246" alt="" width="381" height="246" srcset="https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?w=381 381w, https://i1.wp.com/ksramanan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Screen-Shot-2020-04-09-at-12.32.17-PM.png?resize=300%2C194 300w" sizes="(max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

The above grid is a function of the professional opinion they hold of you and how comfortable you are in requesting them for support.

Priority 1 (Best Case scenario) is a convergence between people who hold a high professional opinion of you and you will find it ‘easy’ to request support.

Priority 2 is composed of people where they hold a high professional opinion of you but you are not so comfortable requesting them. Find ways to move those in Priority 2 to Priority 1.

The other 2 Quadrants are not very useful since they hold a low (or no) professional opinion of you. They could refer your case as an Employee Referral but there is no way they will recommend your case.

3. Once your Priority 1 list with contact details is ready, be ready with a pitch. How will you recall your relationship with them? How will you introduce the topic? What would you like to share? What are you unwilling to share?

In my view, authenticity helps. Since people are expected to leverage their influence, it is important that they get to hear the full story. It is like speaking to your doctor, advocate, or coach. Why would you hide?

4. Look at the Priority 2 list. What is stopping you from seeking their support? Is it your ego? Or some unsavory incident in the past? Is it that you wouldn’t like them to know that you are stuck? Take your call. If it is the ego, try reasoning with yourself. This is the time to cast the net wide – the more the merrier.

Building relationships – your call

5. Make the calls with your introductory pitch to seek their time. Recall your relationship with them. For the actual meeting/call, make sure you set up a video call in case you cannot meet them. Send off the resume to them with a link to your LinkedIn profile.

6.Β During the main call, let them know of your journey. Let them know of your sincere attempts at securing a job.

Make the ‘ask’ clearly. This is not the time to be hesitant. Tell them that you need their support to introduce you to the relevant people. Remember that YOU are searching for a job. It is YOUR need.

Manage your expectations

7. Don’t be disappointed with a lackluster response. Nurture the relationship – it is a small world. Thank them. Take a call. Move on if that’s the best course of action. Update your list.

8. If you receive an encouraging response, ensure you set up a follow-up schedule. A lot of people will tell you that they will revert to you. Find a way for you to call them. Update your list. Make sure you call them on the scheduled date. Don’t act pushy!

Read my post, ‘Downtime is Upskill time’ here.

9. When you secure a job, make sure you inform all the people that you have contacted thus far. Many a time, we do not close the loop. Use this opportunity to let them know that you care for the relationship, irrespective of whether they helped you or not.

10. Celebrate! Update your LinkedIn profile with the new coordinates.

All the best!

PS: for those in comfortable careers: As a Karma strategy, make it a point to support a fixed number of people get a job every year. Check out if you have met your ‘target’. As you climb the ladder making you more influential, do raise that number.

It is easy to ignore a request, but remember that you can make a difference and if you can, you should. For a person who is in dire need, it makes all the difference while searching for a job.

As a Career Coach, I work with people on several areas.
