Whereas, students’ connection to the outer world through e-learning enhances their knack to create new thoughts and ideas. E-learning has a significant role in the education of students in higher classes. With the introduction of handy and easily operable smartphones, online learning has become easily available, affordable, and a quick way of gaining knowledge.</p> <p>The Internet has made life easy. The greater advantage of online learning is its reach to every corner of the world. A student sitting in Ethiopia can comfortably learn from a teacher at Stanford, provided he has uninterrupted internet access and a smart device. Traditionally, distance learning has focused on part-time students, such as permanent workers, military personnel, and non-residents or individuals in inaccessible regions who are unable to attend physical classroom lectures. However, today distance learning has become a reputable part of the educational world, with trends pointing to unending growth. And with the speed that it is growing, especially with the emergence of the novel coronavirus disease, the education sector will be seen as trustworthy to it.</p> <p><strong>The Virus and the Lectures</strong></p> <p>Online Learning can be defined as a form of education in which the fundamentals include physical separation of teachers and students during tutoring and the use of various technologies to assist student-teacher and student-student interaction. Digital learning is exploited to convey formulating, training, and collaborating among students and educators by utilizing different electronic media, tremendously, the Internet, whose tools have encompassed the main chauffeur of e-learning. E-learning has impacted students’ insight, critical thinking, and other dynamics along with other benefits including, the availability of a variety of quality material, global reach, extents to multiple devices, time and requirement based, more resourceful, and cost-effective<strong>. </strong></p> <p>With the emergence of COVID-19, the walls are coming down for schools from class nursery to 12th. For some this educational shift has been a small move but for others, this is a completely new way of education. Most nations have already initiated digital learning in their schools. Teachers from every school and students, even from Kindergarten, are heavily absorbed by the introduction of online learning at such a tender age. For students belonging to higher classes, the academics and regular classes are commenced on digital platforms including Google Meet, Microsoft Teams & Zoom. Numerous advanced schools had already done a lot for the required implementation of technology and infrastructure in their schools, which facilitated a rapid transformation to completely online delivery of teaching during the current crisis and with noteworthy success.</p> <p><strong>Coping With the Life-changing Process</strong></p> <p>The COVID-19 situation has resulted in the progress of digital learning platforms and methods. However, while it is feasible to progressive institutes, the schools and colleges in remote areas are still finding ways to cope up and render their services to their learners. The fact is, virtual classrooms are not as guileless as hiding and seeking. We know how schools are structured. They flourish on structure, timetables, daily attendance, and lesson plans – a thorough, planned operation that has been made to transform into an online mode practically instantaneously. The backward schools and colleges found that challenging and could not deliver their 100 percent. Similarly, the students belonging to rural regions of the country faced challenges in the form of lack of awareness with Digital Technology, network issues, inadequate availability of technological devices, and deficiency of well-trained professors.</p> <p>The challenges mentioned above imitate the ground reality of the propagation of digital education in rural areas through various programs that have been taken by the Government to promote online learning. Some of the initiatives include SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, National Digital Library (NDL), Spoken Tutorial, Free and Open Source Software for Education (FOSSEE), Virtual Lab, e-yantra programs, and Massive Open Online Course (MOOCs).</p> <p>Rural education is important not only for the augmentation of life quality of the backward society but also for the overall progress and development of a country. Considering such limitations, implementing the new digitized education tools in remote parts becomes essential. Apart from the government, several organizations are coming forward to find ways. Starting from <em>Gurukuls</em>, to building the first university and today, along with the world, practicing the most modern way of learning – digital schooling and e-learning platforms. India, along with a mixture of its own has been a land of diversities and prominent cultures, languages, and traditions from across the world. They are or have been settled here at some point in the land’s great history. The societies settled here have left a great social, cultural, and political impact on the systems over the years, especially the education sector. Having experienced almost every taste in the world and undergone a series of ups and down framing its heritage, the Indian Education System that we see today has still managed to flow along with the contemporary world’s algorithms.</p> <p><strong>The System Over the Years</strong></p> <p>Education has been deliberated as an essential measure of an individual’s life. Sadly, since <em>Vedic times</em>, education was restricted to <em>Brahmins and Kshatriyas</em>. The <em>Vedic times </em>had the system of “<em>Gurukul”</em>; a residential school where the student lived with his <em>guru </em>to gain knowledge. The low-born and women were marginalized for the right to education. There weren’t universities for higher education until the Buddhist period when <em>Nalanda</em> and <em>Taxila</em> were established. The medieval period saw the emergence of “<em>pathshala”</em>. The <em>pathshala</em> was available for everyone, except women.</p> <p>But, the system then wasn’t regular as we see today. There were no qualified teachers, no fixed fee structure, no classrooms (students used to sit under a Banyan tree or at their Guru’s house), no timetables, no conduction of annual exams, no textbooks, and not even regular attendance. Students couldn’t always attend classes, especially during harvest season when they were required to work on the fields. The arrival of colonial rule has transformed the system completely.</p> <p><strong>Modern Education and Its Consequences</strong></p> <p>The British introduced a new education system to Indians when they observed how the country was unfit and needed to revolutionize. The education system presented by the British was downright disciplined and orderly. The kids now needed to compulsorily sit for the class. There were fixed structures for everything; classrooms, textbooks, fees, teachers recruitment, and conduction of yearly examinations. Universities were set up in every province. English was made compulsory.</p> <p>Though the system was for British’s own sake, it did bring a stream of modern thoughts and ideas, especially inside middle-class intelligentsia. The introduction of the English language helped nationalist leaders from different linguistic regions to communicate with each other and also brought the liberal and radical thought of European writers. It enabled the exchange of contemporary ideas and thoughts. These educated Indians became the reason for India’s independence. Thus it is clear how the modern system served as a means to making India self-sufficient and autonomous.</p> <p><strong>Lacunas the System Left Behind</strong></p> <p>No doubt, the education system introduced by the British in India was exceptionally structured and was a necessity to pave a way for India’s talents globally. But, what the Indians saw lacking in the system overall was the perpetual need to ground the students with their culture and ethnicity to give them a sense of belongingness. It is when the education system was presented with morals and ethics vital for the character building of an individual.</p> <p>The Indian education system follows what <strong>Mahatma</strong> <strong>Gandhi</strong> sought is the requirement in the 21st century, “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”</p> <p><strong>Current Scenario and the Future</strong></p> <p>The post-independence period saw a lot of amendments in the system. From the establishment of new schools, colleges, and universities to government making provisions for minorities and girls for the right to quality education, India is on its way to modernize the learning methods and reach as far into remote areas as possible. The current situation has made the world opt for online learning methods. Many schools and colleges have implemented online coaching methods but while educational institutions that have means and resources are harnessing online learning tools to deliver lectures via confrontational video instruction, there are still thousands of students from public institutions who are being left out.</p> <p>There are provisions to be made to ensure education methods while tutoring the students including training to teachers on alternative teaching methods (online), gamification of learning, embracing e-learning to rural areas. Education is one of the most important and crucial investments a country can make for its people and their future.</p> <p><strong>Conquering the World with Ancient Ideals</strong></p> <p><strong>Rabindranath Tagore, </strong>Nobel Peace Prize Winner, once quoted <em>“Education means enabling the mind to find out that ultimate truth which emancipates us from the bondage of dust and gives us wealth, not of things but inner light, not of power but love. It is a process of enlightenment. It is divine wealth. It helps in the realization of truth.” </em>Taking inspiration from our own <em>Gurudev, </em>the Indian system of Education promotes values and virtues among the hearts and souls of the students. It gives equal importance to morals and ethics as to the bookish knowledge. Its prime focus is on who the child is, not on what the child knows. The system advocates the building of character through the moral aspects of society.</p> <p>The education system encourages the child with the virtues of Truthfulness to self and others, Respect for others, Devotion to work, Patience, Tolerance, Honesty, and Love for all. These values, as the system believes, is ultimately responsible for developing the personality of the student as well as helps him to overcome his future limitations and face challenges around the world; as it lets the students create a personal mission statement defining their life goals and the person they hope to become. The values they imbibe support the students in crafting a self-monitoring tool to estimate their progress toward their goals; they start keeping a record of their effort to develop in a particular skill or area.</p> <p><strong>Bringing Social Revolution in the Country</strong></p> <p>The greatest perk of the education system lies in the fact that it brought the country one step closer to reforming the caste system and augmenting women’s rights. The education system prohibits the malevolent practices of judging a person by his/her caste. It empowers the downtrodden with a quality education. The system also focuses on how women are led to brutal social norms practiced since ancient times in addition to the violence which they face even today; including rapes, death threats, and acid attacks. Introduction of the current modern education system though dates back to colonial times in the late 19th century, but the battle for removal of the caste system and empowering women is growing at a fast pace each day.</p> <p>The Indian education system derives its roots from the traditional system of education (<em>Gurukuls</em>) and the modern education system. Studying in a mixture of both types of education system enabled the learners to expand their minds and criticize the practices that hamper the cultural authenticity and true essence of the Indians. The system helped the students to learn more about the splendid and renowned history that India has. The Indian education system has also enabled the apprentices to benefit from the latest technology available all over the world; with equipped labs, well-furnished infrastructure renovated tools, and smart-classes. One of the important outcomes that the system gives is that it makes a student “capable”. The structure of the system is such that it prepares a pupil to accept his flaws and stand out to choose his future.</p> <p>Given the above benefits, the Indian system still leads a long way to improvise. But the fact that India is a diverse country with 29 states and 23+ languages spoken, the progress is sure to progress gradually. Looking at the current scenario amid the COVID-19 lockdown, the institutes and colleges have turned towards digital learning. Whom should I bow to first?</p> <p>Indian mystic poet and saint, <em>Kabir</em> Das states that</p> <p>“I first bow to my guru because he’s the one who showed me the path to God.”</p> <p>A Teacher is a very skilled person with people skills comprising of the ability to communicate with others, speak, understand, empathize, and relate. In our tradition, teachers are highly respected as they elevate people’s living standards. They are the building blocks of the society who educate people to make society a better place. To add value, teachers have an influence on their pupils which in turn would be on their society.</p> <p>A Teacher should have essential attributes like subject matter experience, learning enthusiasm, understanding of student differences, the coordination of the teaching process, knowledge and use of teaching-learning techniques, and the design of a learning environment. It is not simple or easy to deal with a large group of easily distractible young people through a meaningful learning path of varying abilities. Effective management of classrooms which includes understanding, flexibility, good planning, understanding of one’s own limitations, and instinct. Skills which can include test preparation and construction; grading; interpretation of test results; use of examination results to improvise teaching and learning; interpretation of standardized tests and reporting of results to students are the highlighted ones.</p> <p>A Teacher is the one who plans for their instructional objectives well in advance and executes their action to ensure optimum efficiency. As said by Jack Dixon, “If we focus on results, you will never change. If we focus on change, you will get results.” A teacher’s role does not end with our academic success but also on our overall growth. Teachers play various roles in imparting education like a second mother to a child in their primary stage holding their hands towards the path of learning with joy and ecstasy. Teachers are more than a guide and mentor who are willing to consider the issues of their students and strive to manage them properly and make the student feel like they still have someone to talk to when they can’t do it with their peers or at home. This makes teaching as exceptional as possible in contrast to other professionals.</p> <p>“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly,” says R. Buckminster Fuller and we all know that a beautiful, joyful and colorful butterfly comes from an unappealing worm. So, we have the choice to generate new ideas, shift our perspectives, perceive new, or to build on other’s ideas that really lie in our creativity. As teachers, we too learn as we teach. This changes ourselves in blending the changing needs of our society at a larger level and is highly gifted and born in teachers. Education doesn’t really end in good grades rather it ends with the overall growth of the child to gift him the best extrinsic world and here lies the role. While Chef Sujatha explained the details of the pre-sent regional recipes during the step-by-step cooking process, Chef Sebastian Breitinger, assisted her with the camera angles to give the best visuals for students. Q & A were taken up at the end of the session and during cooking time when the dishes were kept to simmer. As the Chef shared tips and substitute ingredient information, she also checked on students and their dishes through visuals, to ensure her instructions were being followed.</p> <p>Along with the online cases, a fun activity was initiated by the members of the Gavel’s club along with the teacher-in-charge, Nelissa Andrea Alcasoas, Assistant Professor of General Management, using Zoom meet as a platform for interaction. They organized a Gavel’s club virtual meeting along with the members of the Ana Fonte Toastmasters Club on Saturday, September 5, 2020. The activity included enthusiastic table topics session where each student had to speak for 1-2 minutes on the given table topic.</p> <p>Faculty members are curating classes from the institute’s spacious classrooms some of which have been temporarily converted into studios and equipped with the technology required to conduct online classes through Microsoft Teams platform. Faculty members have access to the studios as per their convenience.
