The Water Jetting Association has suspended all water jetting training
to counter the health threat posed by the COVID-19 virus.

Its Ruling Council has based its decision on Government social
distancing guidelines and planned legislation, designed to protect people
against the virus.

The Water Jetting Association (WJA) is the largest provider of high
pressure and ultra high pressure water jetting training in the UK.

More than 9,850 water jetting operatives attend its City &amp;
Guilds-accredited courses, delivered by WJA-registered training providers and
WJA-approved training instructors, every year.

John Jones, WJA Vice President and Chairman of its Training and Safety
Committee said: “We have not taken this decision lightly, but our priority must
be the personal safety of all people involved in our training programme.”

The suspension period came into force on 18th March 2020.
Measures have been put in place to support companies that have water jetting
operatives who need mandatory WJA refresher training.

Water jetting operatives must retake the one-day Safety Awareness course
every three years to retain their place on the WJA’s international register.

The WJA will now honour Safety Awareness courses for six months beyond
the three-year deadline, from 18th March 2020, instead of one month
as stated in the association’s standard operating procedures.

Given the current expert projections for the development of the COVID-19
(coronavirus) pandemic, this should give companies and individuals time to book
refresher courses when training resumes.

John Jones said: “We will keep the COVID-19 emergency under review and
will reinstate water jetting training when it is right to do so, based on
Government advice and regulatory controls.

“Our objective throughout will be to protect the interests of our
members and those who rely on our water jetting training programme, while
upholding the high standards we set for water jetting safety and quality.”

The association will process all training courses that have taken place
before 18 March 2020. However, this may be to allow successful operatives to
receive their WJA photo identity cards because WJA staff are working from home.

WJA training is recognised as setting the industry standard for water
jetting across all business sectors, including petrochemicals, drainage and
utilities, industrial cleaning, manufacturing, construction and demolition.

As well as the Safety Awareness course, the association provides a range
of practical water jetting modules – Surface Preparation (SP), Tube and Pipe
Cleaning (TP), Drain and Sewer Cleaning (DS), and Hydrodemolition (HD).

Confined spaces can be difficult to get out in a hurry. This makes them an increased safety risk. Pennine Pneumatic Services (PPS) based in Brighouse, Yorkshire has been
nominated Atlas Copco Compressors’ Distributor of the Year 2019, an accolade it
has now earned three times in the past seven years.

Presenting the award, Alexander Pavlov, General Manager of Atlas Copco Compressors UK, commented: “PPS have been consistent performers throughout a challenging year of pre-Brexit business uncertainty. The splendid results of their teamwork across all business lines has contributed greatly to the growth and success of Atlas Copco over this period.”

The 67-strong PPS team’s holistic approach and ability to go the extra mile has contributed greatly to achieving impressive results. According to PPS Managing Director, Ian Harrison: “We were 42% above our annual target on the number of Atlas Copco units sold, and, in terms of order value, we returned a healthy 39% over budget. Overall, the company’s business has grown by a factor of 21%.”

Founded in 1991, PPS has been an authorised premier distributor for
Atlas Copco Compressors for 29 years, serving a broad range of industrial
customers predominantly in West Yorkshire.

Contributory factors to the company’s performance were not only the
sales and service of a wide range of Atlas Copco’s energy-saving compressed air
solutions, but also the successful introduction of industry-leading innovations
in on-site nitrogen generation, rotary screw vacuum pumps, and smart controller
technology to its customer base. It was PPS that sold the very first Atlas
Copco NGM series nitrogen generator unit in the UK. The sales team were also
winners of internal sales promotion competitions for industrial gases projects
as well as refrigerant dryer equipment. A strong investment in their digital
presence and the use of networking and community relations are also
contributing factors to PPS’s success.

The company prides itself in being a people-centric business; an approach clearly demonstrated by schemes such as its on-going, inclusive business development training programmes, both for staff and customers. DFA Media, the organiser of the Plant &amp; Asset Management show, has released the following statement:

DFA Media, organiser of Drives &amp; Controls Exhibition and co-located shows, has been actively monitoring and following advice regarding the Coronavirus outbreak (Covid-19) over the past weeks. It has been decided that Drives &amp; Controls Exhibition and its co-located events will be postponed and rescheduled for 25th-27th January 2021, which will take place alongside MACH Exhibition. We have been following UK Government guidelines and working with the rolling advice from the public health authorities and other organisations, but the effects, actual and projected, of Coronavirus are becoming increasingly evident across all aspects of our lives both here in the UK and across the globe. As a responsible events organiser, ensuring the health and wellbeing of all our exhibitors, contractors and visitors (many of whom face travel restrictions) has to be our top priority and it is therefore with reluctance that we have taken the decision to postpone the event until January.

By working closely with our venue partners, THE NEC, we have been able to secure rescheduled dates for these events in January, alongside MACH. Current modelling projections suggest that the virus will peak in May/ June and decline thereafter during the following months allowing our exhibitors the opportunity to present their technologies, innovations and solutions in an upturning market with no restrictions on travel.

The rescheduled date provides clarity and ensures we have time and space to deliver the same high-quality event we promised, providing a safe and secure environment conducive to business, networking and career development for the manufacturing sector that we serve.

In the context of the international outbreak and spread
 of COVID-19, BEMAS is closely following developments, taking into 
account the advice and recommendations of the World Health Organisation 
and local authorities. The main priority of BEMAS is the welfare, health
 and safety of workers, visitors, speakers and exhibitors.&nbsp;

Taking into account the uncertainty of the risk of the 
further spread of COVID-19 in the coming months, the Board of BEMAS has 
unanimously decided to reschedule the Asset Performance 4.0 conference 
and exhibition. The event will no longer take place in June in Antwerp, 
but will take place on 15, 16 and 17 September 2020. Due to the Antwerp 
conference hall being fully booked in autumn, we decided to move the 
venue to the<a href="https://www.assetperformance.eu/event/4c9dcdc6-0340-45cc-9a1b-176d8295c509/websitePage:4a887f05-5ef4-4edf-a362-30777d3b34a6?5S%2CM3%2C4c9dcdc6-0340-45cc-9a1b-176d8295c509=" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> International Conference Center</a> in Ghent Belgium, approx. 50 km from Antwerp.

<a href="https://www.assetperformance.eu/event/4c9dcdc6-0340-45cc-9a1b-176d8295c509/websitePage:c4b9a92c-1a13-4847-ae08-3ba93eda1c43?5S%2CM3%2C4c9dcdc6-0340-45cc-9a1b-176d8295c509=" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ghent</a> is home to a major university and is a breeding ground for technology start-ups.
 The 60 kilometres long cross-border North Sea Port is home to many 
industrial companies including ArcelorMittal, Cargill and Volvo Cars. 
The ICC is easily accessible by car and public transport and is easily 
accessible by train from the international airport Brussels Airport.

Strengthened by the results of our survey with a wide range
 of potential participants, we feel confident that this decision will 
have a positive impact on the number of participants. 
We will use the additional time to even better prepare all presentations
 and workshops in order to make sure participants will get the best 
possible learning experience at Asset Performance 4.0.

Businesses welcomed the
announcement of a review of business rates, to report in the autumn. The
Research and Development credit will be increased from 12 to 13% – this will be
worth £2,400 on a typical R&amp;D claim, fulfilling a manifesto commitment, the
chancellor said. He announced that the government would more than doubling
investment in R&amp;D to £22bn a year, starting with an increase of 15% next
year.

He announced plans to invest
at least £800m in a new research funding agency modelled on ARPA in the US, and
also pledged to spread more R&amp;D funding around the country – at present 50%
goes to London and the East and South East of England.

There will also be a £28m package
and up to 10,000 start-up loans to support entrepreneurs and businesses to
start

Environmental measures will include
introducing carbon capture and storage at two sites, to capture carbon dioxide
emissions before it is released into the atmosphere.

Make UK chief executive Stephen
Phipson said: “Business understands that dealing with the impact of the
coronavirus on individuals and the economy was always going to be the chancellor’s
priority and he has our full support in doing whatever is necessary to protect
the public and the economy.

“Aside from the overwhelming
immediate priority the chancellor has also recognised the need to turbocharge
investment in long term through measures which will boost the productive
potential of the economy and support green growth. In a world which is rapidly
becoming digital the UK needs to stay at the forefront of research and innovation.
Today’s measures to boost R&amp;D will be applauded by industry and will help
the UK lead in the technologies of the future.”

Dame Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI
Director-General, said the chancellor had delivered “two Budgets in one: a first for national resilience
today and a second for economic ambition tomorrow.”

She added: “While the response to Covid19 is urgent, it is very good to
see this Budget’s focus on innovation and infrastructure. The Chancellor has
listened to many calls from CBI members, with decisive action on vital
long-term issues. The significant uplift in R&amp;D funding, creation of a UK
version of ARPA, a fundamental review of business rates and spending promises
on infrastructure will all bring real benefits to people, business and
communities.”

Tim Thomas, Make UK director of employment &amp;
skills policy, welcomed funding for further education. He said: “Extra capital
funding for the entire FE college estate is both welcome and needed. With
T-levels around the corner for manufacturers, funding for new capital equipment,
which is often a block to greater technical training, cannot come too soon.”

MACH 2020 has followed Hannover Messe 2020 to become the latest industry trade fair to be postponed because of health fears over the Coronavirus. Hannover Messe 2020 is now planned to take place between 13-10 July, while MACH will become MACH 2021, running from 25-28 January next year at the NEC.

James Selka, chief executive of MACH organiser the MTA, said the decision was taken in the best interests of the industry and those who work in it. “We believe that by moving MACH to January 2021 we are going to be able to offer a better experience for our visitors, and better value for our exhibitors, than by holding it in April under the conditions likely to be in place at that time.” MACH was expected to attract over 30,000 visitors, many international.

All exhibitors that had booked for
MACH in April will be offered the same stand space on the new dates and are
being contacted by the MTA team.

Hannover Messe organiser Deutsche
Messe said it made the decision to postpone its fair in close cooperation with
the Hannover Region Health Authority, the Hannover Messe Exhibitors&#8217; Council
and partners the German Engineering Federation VDMA and German Electrical and
Electronic Manufacturers&#8217; Association ZVEI.

It said the Hannover Region Health
Authority had strongly recommended that Deutsche Messe follow the advice of the
Robert Koch Institute on safeguarding health at major events. This called for
fever measuring stations at all entrances and barring people from risk areas or
those who have had contact with people from risk areas from the exhibition
centre. It would have entailed a comprehensive evaluation of all trade fair
participants – from exhibitors and visitors to service providers, exhibit
builders and catering companies.

The organiser continued: “Deutsche
Messe is unable to implement the proposed measures. Their implementation would
impair the staging of the event to such an extent that the event would not
fulfil its purpose or would do so only with considerable restrictions for
exhibitors and visitors.”

Dr Jochen Köckler, chairman of the
Deutsche Messe board of management, said: “With the July date, we offer our
exhibitors the earliest possible time slot to present their innovations to a
global audience and to initiate business.” He added: “In view of the global
economic challenges triggered by the coronavirus in the first half of the year,
the new date offers great opportunities. Thus the world&#8217;s most important
industrial trade fair can provide important impetus for the global economy at
an early stage.”

The decision was supported by the
VDMA and ZVEI.

Earlier Logimat 2020, the intralogistics
solutions and process management show due to be held this week in Stuttgart,
was cancelled due to an official injunction.

No alternative date was available
for Logimat, which as a result will not take place this year. The next LogiMAT
will take place in Stuttgart from March 9 to 11, 2021.

The government should set a national productivity target for
manufacturing growth in England and introduce a business support programme to encourage
the uptake of industrial digital technologies (IDTs), a new report recommends.
The Industrial Strategy Council should be put on a statutory footing to help
achieve this, it adds.

The document <a href="https://www.policyconnect.org.uk/apmg/sites/site_apmg/files/report/2823/fieldreportdownload/levelupindustry.pdf">Level Up Industry</a> was published by
the Manufacturing Commission, which is the research arm of the All-Party
Parliamentary Group for Manufacturing, run by think tank Policy Connect.

It highlights the increasing prevalence of technology and
disruptive new techniques in the sector and sets out seven recommendations for
the government to enable growth in manufacturing and boost productivity.

The first is to establish a national productivity target for
industrial growth, which would need to be measurable and should be overseen by
a statutory body.

“The Climate Change Committee and the UK’s emissions
reduction target has been instrumental in giving the UK a leading role in
driving consistent climate change action,” says Manufacturing Commission chair
Lord Bilimoria in the report’s foreword.

“We believe this model would work well for manufacturing –
with a body based in statute to keep a relentless focus on strategic targets –
coupled with a long horizon and new powers devolved to areas of regional
collaboration to enable increased co-operation.”

The report recommends putting the Industrial Strategy
Council on a statutory footing to achieve this. The council, comprising individuals
from business, academia and wider society, was set up under the previous
government. Its remit includes reviewing the impact of the government’s industrial
strategy and its contribution to UK economic growth.

The report urges Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and
regional bodies to be given the funding and tools needed to engage with businesses
on shaping local policymaking.

A further recommendation is to maximise the return on the increasing
research and development spending by mapping existing regional capabilities and
seeking to create a long term innovation network, bringing together government
agencies, Catapults, universities and businesses.

“As we drive towards 2.4% of GDP and beyond, we must ensure
that this is spent as wisely as possible to enable innovation and growth across
the whole country,” wrote Lord Bilimoria.

The document calls for the establishment of a nationally
available business support programme to encourage the uptake of digital
technology, particularly for small and medium companies, backed by investment
in high speed broadband and 5G infrastructure.

Supply and demand in job opportunities and skills provision
is currently mismatched, the report highlights, and urges a better process to
match learner aspiration to business need.

An additional recommendation is that the planned UK Shared
Prosperity Fund should provide a single, flexible resource to allow regions to
direct funding in line with their Local Industrial Strategies.

years, it says it will focus on making possible digital technology that works
for people in a fair and competitive economy and an open and democratic
society. “New policies and frameworks will enable Europe to deploy cutting-edge
digital technologies and strengthen its cybersecurity capacities,” the
commission said.

“Europe has all it needs to become a world leader in artificial intelligence systems that can be safely used and applied,” the commission added, with “excellent research centres, secure digital systems and a robust position in robotics as well as competitive manufacturing and services sectors”.

In the white paper, the commission envisages a framework for trustworthy artificial intelligence, based on excellence and trust. In partnership with the private and the public sector, the aim is “to create the right incentives to accelerate deployment of AI, including by smaller and medium-sized enterprises”.

It proposes a “human-centric
approach” so that AI systems are developed and used in a way that respects EU
law and fundamental rights, with a regulatory approached based on an assessment
of risk. High-risk AI systems would be certified, tested and controlled in an
analogous way to cars, cosmetics, and toys. For low risk systems there would be
a system of voluntary labelling.

An application would be considered
high-risk if it was used in a specifically listed sector such as transport,
healthcare, or policing, and in addition was used in such a way that risks of injury,
death or damage, or legal implications could arise.

The data strategy aims to make the
EU “a role model and a leader for a society empowered by data”. For this, it
aims at setting up a European data space or “single market” for data, to unlock
unused data and allow it to flow freely across sectors for the benefit of
businesses, researchers and public administrations. The data should be
available to all, whether public or private, start-up or giant, the strategy
says.

To achieve this, the commission will
first propose to establish a regulatory framework for data governance, access
and re-use, creating incentives for data sharing and establishing clear rules
on data access and use, while upholding rights such as personal data
protection.

It will support “the development of
the technological systems and the next generation of infrastructure” to allow
the opportunities of the data economy to be grasped.

Finally, it will launch sectoral specific actions in sectors such as industrial
manufacturing, the green deal, mobility or health.

EU commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton, said: “Our
society is generating a huge wave of industrial and public data, which will
transform the way we produce, consume and live. I want European businesses and
our many SMEs to access this data and create value for Europeans – including by
developing artificial intelligence applications.”

The commission will present later
this year a Digital Services Act and a European Democracy Action Plan.
